After successfully completing this case student, the student will be able to:
- Describe the basic epidemiology and pathophysiology of hepatitis A infection.
- Discuss the mechanisms by which hepatitis A can be spread.
- Discuss the surveillance of reportable infectious diseases.
- Construct and interpret epidemic curves.
- Outline the basic steps in an outbreak investigation.
- Discuss the legal aspects of infectious disease control including collection of personal health-related information by public health officials and the power of the state to regulate and inspect food establishments.
- Discuss the application of descriptive and analytical epidemiologic methods to identify the source of an outbreak.
- Discuss the key elements of environmental inspections of food establishment.
- Distinguish between active and passive immunity and discuss current recommendations for preventing hepatitis A by these methods.
