If we compare the changes in E.coli 0157:H7 infections over time from 1996-2010, we can see that since 1996, the rate of infections have been cut in half. In contrast, Salmonella infections have remained approximately the same since 1996.
This graph represents the changes in the sources of E.coli 0157:H7 outbreaks in the U.S. from when the strain was first discovered through 2002. Throughout the years, produce and dairy have become an increasing source of infection.
The map shows the complex method of infection and transmission of E.coli 0167:H7 from cattle to humans. Shiga toxin-producing E.coli presents a very complex epidemiology. With so many reservoirs and vehicles for human infection and transmission, controlling outbreaks is challenging.
